[citw150] Re: CITW 150 Lesson 4 Q#6--Telnet

Telnet does not require a Unix type server, just to clarify. There are telnet
server options within Windows as well, they are just well hidden because if you
were to impliment them, well....just about anyone with a good packet and port
sniffer could hack into your machine. I have a windows telnet server as well
as a novell telnet server at work that I use regularly to work from home on the
days I stay home sick.

Telnet is a network protocol that allows a user to connect to a server =
on
the internet using their personal computer as a terminal. The server the
user logs into must use telnet also. Telnet runs on a UNIX type server.
Telnet allows the user to do some neat things such as sharing files, =
compile
or run a program, and set a password. Most current computers have a =
telnet
client installed. I used the following tutorial links to learn a bit =
about
telnet before giving it a try.

I think I'm catching on to this Telnet stuff. It reminds me of the old =
DOS
operating system. I played at two different sites.=20

The first site was at telnet://towel.blinkenlights.nl:666 and is called =
the
BOFH Excuse server. I typed the address into my web browser bar =
(Internet
Explorer 6) and hit the go arrow and was immediately connected and
disconnected to the program. At first I thought, "This site doesn't do
anything!" but then I read the text. The program left me with a lovely
excuse to use "That would be because the software doesn't work." It was =
so
much fun reading these hilarious excuses that I kept logging back in =
(hit
the go button on the browser bar again) to read the next one. Limited =
text
based entertainment to be sure but cute none the less.

I entered Telenet games into www.ask.com and received a few sites to =
try. I
followed the procedure above and entered this address
telnet://eldorado.elsewhere.org and hit go. A screen came up asking for =
my
username which the site said to enter "zork" and when it asked for a
password I hit enter. The site said there was no password. After reading =
the
instructions I hit enter to continue (as directed). I was given a menu =
of 39
text based games to play. I chose #24 Sherlock and was told to hit enter
again. The game was Sherlock: The Riddle of the Crown Jewels. I was told =
to
press any key. I played the game for a while. You must read the text and
type in a response. When I tried to open the door I was told I had to =
knock
first. I did. Later when I tried to talk to Sherlock upstairs I was told =
I
had to address him by name. If you have some time on your hands you can
check out this game or one of the other 38 text based games on the site.
When I was finished playing I typed quit and confirmed my choice by =
typing
"yes". The game and telnet connection closed.
