Karen, Yes the day will come, the government is actually working on passing a law on "bullying" in schools. It is a hate crime, maybe not as severe as some, but still it is hatred! I was also picked on as a child. I was overweight all my life and as a child I was made fun of all the time. Sad to say, even my parents joked about having to take me to "Omar the tent maker" to buy my clothes. They later appologized after I got older and was able to tell them how much it hurt! My son was learning disabled in school and had social issues with the kids at school, he also was a target of hatered. I wonder if there will ever come a day when this will all stop? Great job with your research!!!! This is the day that the Lord has made! Be glad in it! While it is 2007, it is amazing to me that racisim, bigotry and hatred is still very much alive and kicking, especially in the United States. One area of great interest to me is about the Bullying that is going on with children. As a child I was affected by this every day of my life. It is a discrimination that can affect children throughout their lives, making adulthood, for some, a miserable existence. While this is something that I have struggled with off and on again, many people never recover from the cruel, insensitive remarks made by others. How many times can you hear, "you're stupid!"; or "Fatso", before you start to believe it? Yes, children will be children, but it is up to us, the parents, the educators, and the leaders in our community to make sure that this type of hatred does not continue. I believe that we can teach our children to love, understand and accept other's differences. It may sound simple, but this is something that could change the world, one small child at a time. I am grateful that Educators and Social Workers are stepping up and trying to put an end to this but they can't do it alone! I urge everyone to please try to make a difference in child's world. Offer encouragement, be a guide, a mentor. The return on your investment is priceless. Check out the Prejudice and Hatred websites at: Anti Defamation League http://www.adl.org or Civil Rights at http://www.civilrights.org. The Anti Defamation League speaks on the basis of my reply under the category of education.
