Fellow classmates,

The societal issue that I am choosing to write about is Prejudice and Hatred.
While it is 2007, it is amazing to me that racisim, bigotry and hatred is still
very much alive and kicking, especially in the United States.

One area of great interest to me is about the Bullying that is going on with
children. As a child I was affected by this every day of my life. It is a
discrimination that can affect children throughout their lives, making
adulthood, for some, a miserable existence. While this is something that I
have struggled with off and on again, many people never recover from the cruel,
insensitive remarks made by others.

How many times can you hear, "you're stupid!"; or "Fatso", before you start to
believe it? Yes, children will be children, but it is up to us, the parents,
the educators, and the leaders in our community to make sure that this type of
hatred does not continue. I believe that we can teach our children to love,
understand and accept other's differences. It may sound simple, but this is
something that could change the world, one small child at a time.

I am grateful that Educators and Social Workers are stepping up and trying to
put an end to this but they can't do it alone! I urge everyone to please try
to make a difference in child's world. Offer encouragement, be a guide, a
mentor. The return on your investment is priceless.

Check out the Prejudice and Hatred websites at: Anti Defamation League
http://www.adl.org or Civil Rights at http://www.civilrights.org. The Anti
Defamation League speaks on the basis of my reply under the category of
education.

Now you know why I chose this quote:

"Your potential is a great deal better than anyone will ever permit you to
believe" L. Ron Hubbard
