November 6, 2013 TIGERS 12 St. Pius X (Festus) 6 Rain throughout the day soaked Hopke Field, and turned it into a muddy track…a perfect environment for the Lancers of St. Pius X to upset the Tigers. The Lancers controlled the ball throughout most of the night, but 2 25 yard TD carries by the Tigers Rod Jones provided just enough scoring for the Tigers to slide their way into the Class 2 District 1 championship game. TIGERS 12 St. Pius X 6 Many Tiger fan were stunned when it appeared the Tigers would be held scoreless in the first quarter. The two teams traded a couple of quick possessions before the Tigers got the ball back with 3:14 to go in the 1st following a crucial 4th down stop by the Tiger defense. Rod Jones then had carries of 4, 4 and 1 yard. Tyler Grissom then ran for 18 yards and had another carry for no gain. Grissom then hit Jones with a middle screen for a 23 yard gain to the Lancers’ 25 yardline. Jones then burst to the outside, was able to make a quick cut on the very slippery field and raced 25 yards into the endzone. The Tigers 2 point play failed, as the Grissom slipped in the mud after taking the snap. TIGERS 6 St. Pius X 0 with 0:27 to go in the 1sgt quarter. The two teams traded punts to begin the 2nd quarter. The Tiger defense again stopped St. Pius when a 4th down pass fell incomplete, giving the Tigers the ball at their own 42. The Tiger offense was unable to take advantage of the good field position and was forced to punt again. St. Pius ran 2 plays and the clock expired, ending the 1st half. TIGERS 6 St. Pius X 0 The Tigers recovered the onside kick attempt at the Tigers 49. Darrell Monroe had a nice 9 yard run on 1st down. Monroe slipped at the line of scrimmage on 2nd down, for no gain. Grissom then ran for 2 yards giving the Tigers a 1st down. Monroe then had a strong run for 13 yards, but apparently was re-injured on the play. He was taken to the lockerroom where he was checked out by a doctor. He would return to the sideline, but would not return to action. Jones replaced Monroe at running back, and carried for 1 yard to the Lancers 25. On the next play it was again Jones, again breaking to the outside, again for the 25 yard TD. The 2point run attempt was stuffed by the Lancers. TIGERS 12 St. Pius X 0 with 10:11 left in the 3rd quarter. The Lancers offense would finally come to life and answer the Tigers score. Chris Filer had carries for 19, 6, 2, 1 and 3 yards. Tryson Thornton carried for 10 yards. Filer then carried for 2 yards to the Tigers 14. Lancers QB Mickey Karoly then hit Filer with a 14 yard TD pass. The PAT attempt failed. TIGERS 12 St. Pius X 6 with 4:17 left in the 3rd. The Tiger offense failed to move the ball and were forced to punt. The snap from center slid past Colt Callens who was forced to just fall on the ball, giving the Lancers the ball at the Tigers 38 with momentum well on the side of the Lancers. Thornton carried three times in a row, for gains of 1,1 and 4. On 4th and 4 the Lancers had a costly false start penalty making it 4th and 9. Thornton caught a pass for a 6 yard gain, giving the Tigers the ball at the Tigers 31. The Tigers would run one play before the quarter came to an end. Two more Tiger plays to begin the 4th quarter, and the Tigers were again forced to punt. Callens punt would roll dead at the Lancers’ 31 yardline. The Tiger defense held the Lancers. Assisted greatly by Callens tackle of Filer for a 9 yard loss. The Lancers punted to the Tigers 40. The Tiger offense started off well, with a nice 14 yard run by Jamal Johnson. Jones carried for 4. Grissom carried for 4. Jones then raced for 30 yards before being knocked out of bounds at the Lancers’ 8 yardline by Thornton. The Tigers appeared to be poised to put the game out of reach with a 1st and goal from the 8, but the Lancers had other ideas. Grissom carried for no gain. Jones carried for 1 yard. Hunter Trevathan appeared to have a seam, but slipped making a cut for a gain of 1 yard. Grissom’s 4th down pass fell incomplete, giving the Lancers the ball at their own 6, 94 yards away from tying or winning the game, with 5:31 left in the game. The Lancers matriculated the ball down the field (credit to Hank Stram). Lance Ervin carried for 4 yards to the 10. Filer moved the ball out to the 20 with a 7 yard carry and a 3 yard carry. Ervin ran for 9. Thornton for 5, then 3, then 6, then 2. Filer would carry for 5 yards, to midfield. Filer then carried for 2 to the Tigers 48. Thornton ran for 3 to the 45. Thornton then carried for 1 yard, and then for 4 to the Tigers 40. Thornton was then dropped for a loss of 4 by Tiger Landon Stricklin, setting up a crucial 4th and 6. Remember the Lancers false start penalty earlier? Well, it happened again and at a terrible time for the Lancers, creating a must-have 4th and 11 with just 0:52 left in the game. Karoly appeared stopped at the line of scrimmage, but carried the Tiger tacklers before finally being stopped after a gain of 7…which would have been enough for a 1st down but for the false start penalty. The Tigers knelt twice, and the Tigers breathed a sigh of relief. FINAL: TIGERS 12 St. Pius X 6 This was the 1st matchup between the Tigers and St. Pius X. However, I have a feeling that we will be seeing more of them in the future as they were a talented, young team. The win pushes the Tigers to 9-1 on the season, and puts them in the Class 2 District 1 finals to face the Malden Greenwave, who won handily tonight over Scott City. Hopefully the weather and field conditions will be a little better for the Class 2 District 1 final. Malden is much improved from September 6, when the Tigers defeated the Green Wave at Malden 32-7, and the Tigers will come into the championship game riddled with injuries. I hope to see a bunch of LOUD, TIGERS FANS at Hopke Field Monday night as the Tigers attempt to win the Class 2 District 1 championship their 10th time in the last 11 years, and for the 6th year in a row.
