Victory for Pale Male! Representatives of Audubon, New York City Parks and
Recreation, Thank Pale Male's Supporters as Spikes and Nest Cradle are
Installed at 927 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY, Thursday, December 23, 2004 - Today, contractors working for 927
Fifth Avenue reinstalled the anti-pigeon spikes which enabled the Red-tailed
Hawk Pale Male to build a nest at the building site and successfully raise his
young over the last decade. A safety guardrail was also installed on the
twelfth-floor window cornice; a schematic is available at www.audubon.org
<http://www.audubon.org/> <<http://www.audubon.org/>>. Pale Male's supporters
were on hand to witness the installation.
"It's the miracle on 74th Street," said New York City Audubon Society Executive
Director E. J. McAdams. "The grassroots support for Pale Male and Lola has
changed the hearts of the building. Now I hope Pale Male and Lola will come
home for the holidays."
"People called us from all over the world to help," said National Audubon
President John Flicker. "Pale Male inspired and motivated nature lovers
everywhere. We are grateful to the owners of 927 Fifth Avenue for working with
Audubon to find a positive solution."

Audubon Invites Birders to Participate in the Christmas Bird Count
New York, NY, Thursday, December 14, 2004 - The National Audubon Society calls
upon volunteers throughout the Americas to participate in Audubon's
longest-running wintertime tradition, the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).
Counts are open to birders of all skill levels, and this year, about 2,000
individual counts are scheduled to take place throughout the Western Hemisphere
from December 14, 2004 to January 5, 2005.
This year, participation in the CBC is more important than ever - contributors'
findings will be included in a comprehensive study of the CBC results from the
past 39 years. In 2005, Audubon's next "State of the Birds Report" will be
issued, detailing the decline and rise of bird populations nationally over the
past 39 years of the Count. This will incorporate both the CBC and USGS
Breeding Bird Surveys since 1966.
"Birding for the Christmas Bird Count allows you to have fun while generating
important information that will be used in our bird conservation effort," says
Geoff LeBaron, Audubon's Christmas Bird Count director. "Audubon and our
partners at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and the Boreal Songbird
Initiative have analyzed information collected by CBC participants over the
last four decades: for the first time, we have good estimates of population
trends for a number of species that spend their winter with us but breed far to
the north."
CBC compilers enter their count data via Audubon's website
www.audubon.org/bird/cbc <http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc>
<<http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc>> or Bird Studies Canada's homepage
www.bsc-eoc.org <http://www.bsc-eoc.org/> <<http://www.bsc-eoc.org/>> where the
105th Count results will be viewable in near real-time.

Mitchell Lake Audubon Center Receives Corporate Sponsorship for Education
Programs
San Antonio, TX, Wednesday, December 22, 2004 - Audubon Texas is pleased to
announce that Tesoro Corporation and Alcoa Fujikura Limited, a division of
Alcoa Foundation, are both sponsoring educational programming at the newly
opened Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, a wildlife refuge and education center
located on the south side of San Antonio. Tesoro Corporation is sponsoring the
Docent Training Program and Alcoa Fujikura Limited will sponsor various
education programs.
Opened to the public in October, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center offers
programs that relate to nature, ecology, scientific observation and
identification, resource management, and citizenship.
"Learning science outdoors in nature is exciting and makes it easier for
children to understand concepts that are sometimes difficult to grasp in the
classroom," says Iliana Peña, director of the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center.
"For example, offering children the opportunity to actually collect insects
from water to measure water quality, brings classroom messages to life and
creates an experience children will remember."
The Tesoro sponsorships will allow individuals to complete a 10-week
docent-training workshop held at the center in January. The workshop will
educate docents about the history of Mitchell Lake and the National Audubon
Society, teach them how to educate others about the natural history of the
area, and familiarize volunteers in the art of interpretation. Alcoa Fujikura
Limited will sponsor educational programs at the Audubon center geared toward
schoolchildren and families in San Antonio and the surrounding communities.
Hands-on outdoor activities customized to the area's unique ecosystem will help
visitors better understand the local environment, and encourage a sense of
long-term stewardship.

Audubon New Mexico Partners with Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge
Sante Fe, NM, Wednesday, December 22, 2004 - Audubon New Mexico is partnering
with the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge on the edge of New Mexico's eastern
plains to provide the Refuge's first education outreach program for children.
With funding from the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish Share with Wildlife
Program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Audubon New Mexico's
educators are providing their Birds for a Purpose curriculum to local
elementary classes using the Refuge's playa lakes and prairie grasslands as the
classroom.
Although this part of New Mexico has a wide range of habitats, schoolchildren
in nearby rural schools have few opportunities for hands-on science exploration
outdoors. Audubon's programs are offered free to the schools, including bus
transportation to the Refuge. The Maxwell Refuge is a hidden gem in the
National Wildlife Refuge system, providing an important stopover for migrating
waterfowl, a safe haven in cattle country for grassland species, and a home to
New Mexico's declining burrowing owl population.

creating two new innovative four-hour programs, demonstrating understanding of
Audubon history and mission, and knowing New England's natural history inside
and out.
