                    - Spam threatens VoIP technology -
  Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com)

Madrid, February 21, 2005 - VoIP technology, based on Internet telephony,
could become the new target for spam, as announced at the RSA Conference=
 and
reported in The Register.

VoIP uses the Internet infrastructure -based on TCP/IP-, to transmit voice
without needing conventional lines to establish calls. This results in
cheaper phone calls than traditional telephony. As opposed to its
advantages, Bruce Schneier, a renowned IT security researcher, has
highlighted that Internet telephony will become the new target for=
 spammers.
In his opinion, history has demonstrated that up until now, spammers have
taken advantage of any broadcast means available to reach their target.

Even though it is a potential threat, possible solutions are already being
studied -such as pattern-based white lists or filters- so that VoIP
technology will be able to combat spam in a similar way to how it is
currently done in email.
