[chadfree] Re: Tech Support - Rene (was Peggy- Photo program question_

I had a call yesterday that frustrated me. We are able to connect to
our Wi-Fi radios across the Inernet using either telnet or the web. I
tried to connect to this customer's radio to see what was wrong with it.
Me: Is the radio on a public IP? One I can connect to across the
Internet?
Him: Yes. Try 192.168.x.x
M: No, that's a private address
H: Oh. Okay, it's 65.222.x.x
M: Okay. Hmmm...I can ping the radio, but can't telnet into it, or get
in to the web interface. Is it behind a firewall?
H: No. No firewall.
M: Strange. You're sure that's the correct address? 65.222.x.x? That's
the radio's address?
H: Yes, that's the one.

{Later...}

M: Let me verify. The address of the radio itself is 65.222.x.x?
H: No, that's the IP address our ISP gave us. The actual address of the
radio is 192.168.x.x
M: <sigh> Okay, you told me it was 65.222.x.x to the radio, but no
matter. Can you forward the port on your router to allow me to connect
to the radio itself?
H: Uh...how do I do that?

Gaaaaahhhhh! This is a sysadmin at an ISP who doesn't know how to port
forward an internal address, doesn't know the IP addresses of his
equipment, and yet expects me to tell him what the problem is....Don't
think I'd use them as my ISP...

Cheers,
Rod
