[chadfree] Re: Tech Support - Rene (was Peggy- Photo program question_

I always get confused ... I look at the job ads for the sys-admins ... and
then I look at the sys-admins I've met ... and the two just don't match ...

At school the biggest problem is that we've got a Windows XP network with
120 machines ... running of some sort of Windows NT server (think it's a
2000 or 2003 server, but not sure). Our biggest complaint is that the
machines are not setup to store the profiles on the server, meaning any
change we make, to programs or to windows, is local ... they've not set "my
documents" up to default point to the network file server, which is like a
10 second thing to do ... They don't use optimized and secure XP setup, but
a simple out of the box ... they've not even set any ratio on the user
storage folders ... meaning we've got 183 GB storage shared with 500
students ... result: one student can fill up the entire drive, effectively
preventing others from saving anything to the server ... and because this is
a programmer's education, we've all got admin rights to the machines ...
meaning people can install basically anything they want on them... and they
do ... like live dictionaries, multiple messengers, and other whacky stuff
that causes these slow machines to crawl...

When some of us complained to one of the sysops about not having it setup
properly, he just shook his head and left... basically that seems to be the
standard response to most comlains in that place...
