Well, Dave, some would say that's the point...i.e. the OS should be
un-eventful, just dutifully providing the required services...not
requiring the user to babysit it or kick it, or reboot it randomly etc...
...but I do have fun with my Gentoo! Debian does, of course, have
"ports" which of course seems to be at least partly where the Gentoo
portage came from, so perhaps you are really just getting back to you
"root"s... (ok, I that was contrived, but I couldn't pass up the bad pun
once my brain excreeted it!)
