Are you aware of LeoCAD? http://leocad.org/
(I'm not trying to stop you from creating an Lego application
for Linux, but just wondering if you knew that there is one
already.)

The license of LeoCAD seems a bit unclear, even if the author talks
about "free software". From what i found out with google the program
itself seems to be GPL, but there seems to be some issues with the
parts library.
