I'd agree that there's not much point to a message board given the sporadic 
level of activity on the list.  If the discussion threads were getting heavily 
intermingled, it might change, but to date that's not been the case.

There have similarly been other attempts at setting up a common IRC room on 
Freenode by others, but they don't seem to last.  There's no unifying goal or 
reason for the channel to exist "most" of the time given the users and devs 
don't collaborate much between their respective communities.  Between #brlcad, 
#emc, and a few other channels on Freenode, that covers just about everyone as 
it is that would probably join.

I'd suggest saving your time on both counts.  We need more consolidation into 
existing resources, not new community resources that might divide as you note.  
That's my 0.03 at least.. ;-)
