I went through something similar a few months back, and the problem is not
with the OD people but rather with the FSF people. From first hand experience
I
can tell you that if you want to link the OD libraries into your open source
code you will need to do so under a modified GPL, with the modification being
you give specific permission for the end user to link the OD libs with your
otherwise GPL code.
The program I was working on was specifically written to provide a human
usable interface to the OD libraries and I once wrote that it seemed kind of
silly
to give an end user specific permission to do what the program was actually
written for. Big mistake - the FSF people have absolutely no sense of humor
when it comes to their license. I hindsight I can see their point - they are
trying to protect the end user as much as the program author, and all the while
fighting off the big commercial boys.
I don't know the specifics about the LGPL license, but at one point I was
looking at the MIT license and that seemed pretty liberal.
