I believe that learning to code a little will help a lot in our quest
for Linux CAD. Python is a good language to get started with. I am
primarily a mechanical CAD person. I didn't know much about programming
several years ago, but started to learn python because it looked
approachable. It seems that a lot of people have the same idea. Now, I
see a lot of interesting projects using python as scripting. In Yorik's
case, he's been able to put 2D tools into FreeCAD (which didn't seem to
have much in the way of 2D to begin with), using python. I've been
contributing python code to a project that does computer aided machining
and is written in C++. The author seems to like my code now. The
things that I write in python are small pieces, but they help me use his
application and they also make the project more appealing to other users.
I am interested in Blender now, because it has python built in. I don't
know much about the Blender way of doing things, but I think I can use
some aspects of Blender for my CAM needs.
So, I encourage everyone to learn a little bit about coding. It isn't
so hard.
Thanks,
Dan
