9. BUSINESS NOTES: NEW SOLVERS, LINUX INITIATIVE
Russian company LEDAS, a new entrant in the CAD geometric solver
market, released a 2D geometric solver and has a 3D solver in the
works. LGS (LEDAS Geometric Solver) v1.0 supports creation and
modification of designs using geometric and engineering constraints.
LEDAS says its scalable architecture makes variational and parametric
techniques available in a wide range of products. Planned future
enhancements include full support for splines, well-constrained
diagnostics, move-under constraints, autoconstraining, and
optimization algorithms. The 3D version of LGS is due for prerelease
in the third quarter of 2004.

Silicon Graphics launched an initiative to extend its graphics
technology to systems running the Linux operating system. SGI will
work with various open source graphics projects, including Chromium,
and release a developer toolkit. The goal is to provide a commercial
Linux visualization solution on par with UNIX systems.

Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of DOS
and danced the skies on Linux silvered wings.
