[cad-linux] Re: cad platform?

Mandrake is the undisputed favorite for those just starting.
I've been on linux for 5 years and i still like it.
currently i'm running MDK 6.0 on one box and MDK 7.0 on my main desktop.
over the years i've run Caldera, did not like it, RedHat, good but avoid the
odd.0 relases(3.0, 5.0 , 7.0) they tend to be buggy. hold out for the ?.1's.
i've run slackware, that will probably be what i run next(again), and
TurboLinux, back when they were still PHT. Debian, has always been a little
over my head, but it's also the undisputed "most stable". I've run Suse, not
bad. At one point they were way ahead of the others on video drivers, i'm not
sure now.

my normal advice is to either try mandrake or see if there is a local LUG(linux
users group), sign up, and see what most of them are running. There is no
replacement for having someone there when you do your first install. as the
saying goes "learn from others, for you will never live long enough to make all
the mistakes yourself".

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Dos
and danced the skies on Linux silvered wings.
