I tried Moonlight Atelier and I quite liked it. It took a little bit of
getting used to and is quite powerful. But as I came to need more from
it I ran into the problem of very little documentation. All those
enticing menu items and no way to find out what they do. I heard MA was
a clean room clone of SoftImage so I even tried to find my answers there
but it became too complicated and too far off the track of what I needed
to do.
So I finally followed Phrostie's advice and installed Ayam3D. It looks
good and at least has full documentation. Too bad Blender is such a
vertical learning curve. And when is someone going to post some
screenshots of BRL-CAD?
I still quite like Moonlight Atelier though. An open source project has
begun to rescue it and they are starting with the last open source
version which is a ways back. I find the more modern closed source
version to run much better. Just remember to hit the r key when you
return from an outside app to cause a screen repaint. Keep the Modes
dialog open and use the shortcut keys. Here's hoping the good open
source folks can can bring Moonlight back and keep it thriving.
There certainly is a theme here though: Blender, Moonlight, BMRT, MOPS
and perhaps others all go bust and become no longer advanced, supported
or released. Linux is a great platform for CAD and 3D and my dual P3
1ghz box hums like a charm. But I see all these great free tools stumble
and fall by the wayside. I wish I had money to support these worthy
causes but I am so broke. Maybe the commercial-paid-for slash
educational-very-cheap model is the way to go? That way the developers
get some cash and us little guys get the great tools.
