Ok, I tested this when I was home for lunch, and as
Nuno Sucena said, this works also:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libqt-gl.so.2 varicad

/usr/lib/libqt-gl.so.2 is a symbolic link to /usr/lib/libqt-gl.so.2.3.1
which was the file that I copied around and renamed.
