and around v.5 they changed from ACIS to ParaSolid (which is owned by the
competitor EDS (www.eds.com) that make Unigaphics and Solid Edge). I was told
the transition was not smooth for the endusers :-).

The standars formats are *.slddrw *.sldasm and *.sldprt (drawing, assembly and
part files). Slddrw is a parametric dimensioned 2D representation of a part
or assembly file. Sldasm is what Phrostie describes (productfile) also
paramteric.
the parametrics will be lost if saved as x_t and x_b (like when you make a PDF
file which will not automatically update when you edit the source file).
Therefore if you only read x_t and x_b users will have to save a copy to that
format, and could instead save as PDF, TIFF, SAT (ACIS), DWG, DXF, that can
be read by other viewerproducts. Or have the user make an executable
e-drawing which can be excuted in windows
