Hi all,
If you're a student interested in Open Source (or know some students),
now is the time to act to get involved in Google's wonderful Summer of
Code program.
http://code.google.com/soc/
Each year, Google offers students the opportunity to spend their summer
vacation coding rather than flipping burgers. You propose a project,
and if selected, you're assigned a mentor and provided with a stipend.
It is a competitive program to get into, but offers an amazing amount
of real-world experience and the ability to get seriously involved in
an open source project of your choosing.
Please help us get the word out to students and remind them that the
deadline is fast approaching (noon (PDT) on Friday!)
For you non-students, your efforts to connect with students will greatly
benefit the cad-linux community. The following projects (and maybe
more) are good candidates for student involvement this year:
BRL-CAD
http://my.brlcad.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2009/Project_Ideas
PythonCAD (via Python Software Foundation)
http://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2009
VectorSection (I would mentor via The Perl Foundation)
http://www.perlfoundation.org/perl5/index.cgi?gsoc
Please feel free to contact me with questions. If you're interested in
working on a project I didn't list, anything open source is fair game
so long as you can find a willing mentor and the appropriate mentoring
organization.
Thanks,
Eric
