What about modifying it to print the dwg file?

That way, you could set up a printer that could process the file into a
raster image (kind of like setting up a pdf printer)

I think you could print it to a postscript printer and then I think there
are programs that would allow you to save it as png (for instance).  The
combination of Ghostscript and ImageMagick should do the trick to convert
from EPS to PNG

Well this turned out to be a whole lot easier than I expected, mainly
because
I was able to lift 90% of what I needed from an example program provided by
the OD people.   If any one out there wants a copy please drop a note to me
at  "buyer242299@xxxxxxx".  I will then E-mail either the source files or a
compiled version (your choice).  Since the program is command line only the
compiled version should work on most machines.
