hi there,
i'm an architect and enthusiast of free software, i know how to use linux
although i'm not able to use open source software in my daily work because
i'm too tied down with microstation and haven't found anything similar in
the free constellation [it seems that there is not such thing yet].
so my example of a desirable program for architecture [and probably more
designing processes as industrial design] would be bentley's microstation
v8.
because, in short:
- compared with autocad is much clearer (for example, managing line weights
and styles is much easier as what you see in the screen is what you get thru
the printer -wysiwyg)
- powerful and absolutely integrated 2d and 3d tools
- advanced 3d rendering, visualization and animation capabilities
- flexible view window management
- great achivement in precision input: Accudraw
- unlike autocad, conceived as 'cosmopolitan', capable to manage and
import/export diverse drawing formats
- ...and many more...
as i strongly believe that the [present and] future of the desingning
process is to work simultaneously on 3d models an 2d plans -lasts depending
on the firsts rather than the contrary- i think that if i would be an
open-source developer [or company] trying to achive a complete and powerful
tool, i would start analyzing, completing and modelling the code from a
program like Blender [that is already a powerful 3d program, so much of the
hardest work would be done] to make it capable of:
- manage and produce 2d drawings with precision [from scratch or exported as
views or sections of a 3d model, i guess that 2d drawings could be perceived
and managed as simpler 3d models]
- manage external references [other drawings/models attached to the active
one]
- dynamically dimensioning
- have few text processing tools
- possibility of fill/hatch 2d surfaces
- special attention to printing [scaling, line styles,...] issues
- ................................................ [fill this yourself ;-)]
- i don't think that we really need native pre-fabricated [parametric]
construction elements [complex walls, stairways and so on] but powerful
geometrical tools --as always been-- also because in an 'open source
enviroment' the models/blocks/elements created would be rapidly in
circulation through the networks that emerge [and maybe this could help to
lead us to an 'open source' architecture].
this scheme [develop from an existing free 3d package] would be a faster way
than
reinvent the weel trying to get a big piece of software starting from
scratch or from a modest 2d cad tool.
my opinion is that this could be much more viable through an organized
enviroment/network as sourceforge.
hope this would help,
david juarez
