Um, I don’t think so. It sounds like you’re asking to contact a controller when
you don’t need to. Honestly, it’s hard to tell what’s going on without the
actual transcripts of the interactions.

That’s rather odd. The fact remains that VFR is definitely the only time you
should be able to request flight following. So I’m not sure what’s going on
in this case, but definitely suggest being careful about selecting IFR in
future

Part of the problem was that you were flying VFR. THe same key which
contacts a controller is used to request flight following in this case.
Flight following is exclusively a VFR service.
