Oh that makes sense, I did think I had selected IFR but thinking about it now I
think I accidentally skip that step by mistake and if memory serves me
correctly the default selection is VF are.

Part of the problem was that you were flying VFR. THe same key which contacts
a controller is used to request flight following in this case. Flight
following is exclusively a VFR service.
