Ooh that was embarrassing - failed to spot that one in the docs :-(
Worse still, it turns out that "xconf;startx" gives me a 640x480
desktop, whereas a straight "startx" gives me 1024x768 - so I'm actually
better off without it!

You should be able to escape a semicolon using $;
The relevant info is buried in the documentation on this page:
http://www.cdshell.org/doc/varref.html (under Using Variables
(reading)).
Hopefully that will work and the semicolon will pass all the way down to
isolinux.
