[boot scriptor] Next release coming up

Hi everyone,

I wanted to put the word out that the next release of Boot Scriptor will be
available soon. I'm smoothing out some rough edges at the moment, but for the
most part the first beta is ready. Bear in mind that some requested features
aren't implemented yet, but the so-called 'enabling technology' is in place,
which is the important thing.

Now I should mention that the name of the program will be changed to CD Shell.
Boot Scriptor was a nice name at the time, but I think now is the time/chance
to get away from it. Hopefully it will be apparent that with the new features
offered in CD Shell, the program is really a lot like a *nix shell (well, a
very simple one).

Another reason for the name change, and the fact that the version numbering
will jump up to 2.0, is that I am breaking compatibility with Boot Scriptor
scripts. The new features required some changes to the scripting language
that could not be avoided. These new features are namely variable support,
command predication, and multiple commands per-line.

I think the power and flexibility provided by the new features will outweigh
the costs associated. You will be able to do some cool stuff, but you'll have
to learn the new semantics, and your scripts will look a bit more like a
computer program rather than readable English sentences.

The beta will come with a 'beta tester's guide', which is just a text document
explaining the major differences between CD Shell and Boot Scriptor 1.2. Also
I've created some sample scripts to help illustrate some items in the
documentation. Hopefully the transition won't be too scary...

So if all goes well, look for the new release in the next week or so, barring
any catastrophes. :) Once you've had the chance to play with the first beta,
I'd love to take any comments, criticisms, or whatever feedback you may have.

Mike
