[Bristol-Birds] upper east TN herons

Saturday, 16 APR 2005
Greenbelt at American Way, Kingsport, TN (Sullivan Co.)

Observed:  
     9 active Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests
     1 Red-shouldered Hawk male feeding 1 female on nest
Note - No young or sub-adults were observed.

Sunday morning 17 APR 2005
Sycamore Shoals Rd., Elizabethton, TN (Carter Co.)

Observed:
     3 active Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests, including the one observed 
last week
     1 Red-shouldered Hawk
Note - From two sites ( the state park and the city property) a total of 8 
adult Yellow-crowned Night-Herons and 4 nests were seen  in Elizabethton 
Sunday. 
 No young or sub-adults were observed.

Sunday afternoon, 17 APR 2005
Hwy 107 and Onks Lane, Washington Co., TN

Observed:
     4 Great Blue Heron nestlings being fed on one of the 14 visible nests
Note - Many Black and Turkey Vultures were present, as usual.  The vultures 
roost next to the colony, and in the winter roost in the colony.  Also observed 
was one Broad-winged Hawk soaring over the area.

Monday afternoon, 18 APR 2005
Fort Henry Dam tailwaters, Sullivan Co., TN

Observed:
     1 Great Blue Heron nestling being fed on one of the 13 visible nests
Note - Great Blue Herons were also observed gathering sticks still.  4 adult 
Black-crowned Night-Herons were observed on the South Holston River near the 
colony, but no nesting activities were observed for this species.
