[Bristol-Birds] great Northern Waterthrush record !!!!!

Randy Smith's and Ron Harrington's discovery of a Northern Waterthrush today at
Hurricane
Campground is an another amazing discovery coming out of Smyth Co. in Southwest
Virginia.
This is the first record of this species during the breeding season in the
region in 34 years.

Their find is another of several very exciting observations of this species
during the breeding
season in the region. It is a rare and very local summer resident in the
mountains
of western Virginia,

One bird was observed at Grindstone Campground, Washington Co., VA on 19 June
1974
by Charlie Vaughn, and two were found at Beartree Campground on 22 June 1974 by
Dick
Peake, Keith Fielder and others. There were several other possible records, but
the birds were wary and not singing well. The only previous summer records
before 1974
came from this area when a singing bird was found near Grindstone on 1-2 July
1972 by
C. E. Stevens. The Hurricane Campground area is about 4 miles NE of Grindstone
Campground.

There are no breeding season records for this species in Northeast Tennessee.

Good stuff. Good birding for the region.

Let's go birding......

Randy Smith and I had a good look at a Northern Waterthrush today at the
Hurricane Campground, Smyth County, VA. This was a life bird for Randy.
