[Bristol-Birds] details and directions to Steele Creek Park meeting at 6 p.m.

The City of Bristol Tennessee is expected to reveal to the public, Tuesday (Apr
26), a decision by the State of Tennessee regarding what is belived to be
inappropriate uses of Steele Creek Park land. At this hour, the decision is
expected to be made public by City Manager Jeffrey Broughton. The meeting
begins at the city's Slater Center at 6 p.m. Direction and details are at the
end of this message.
Broughton and other city officials appeared before a committee of the Tennessee
Department of Environment and Conservation in Nashville earlier this year. At
issue is a developer who is alleged to have encroached upon park property with
the building of private homes, driveways and landscaping. The city council
previously, and rather quietly, voted to not oppose the encroachment.

We are expected to hear a presentation that reveals how the State of Tennessee
and the City of Bristol Tennessee will deal with this issue.

Friends of Steele Creek Park are expected to be there and we hope they will
have a statement, either verbal or writen or both.

This is a critical time in the history and future of Steele Creek Park. A few
years ago the city wanted to put up a police and government radio transmission
tower in the park. They might also want to grant permission for such private
installations. The city has wanted to put a water tank in the park. A city
long-range plan for roads and traffic has been said to include a road throught
the park from one side of the city to other. That road, at one time, included
the possiblity of going through where the dam and main recreation area is
located.

We need a good showing of concerned folks. We need warm bodies and faces to
let the city know this is important. We cannot have an empty room with just
five or six people there. It would be too easy for the city to think no one
cares. No telling how vulnerable this park could become. Or Bays Mountain
Park or Winged Deer Park or many others around the area.

We need you to come and help. You do not have to be a resident of the city to
appear on behalf of this important concern. Actually, more people from
throughout the region would be better. We're not even sure if the general
public even knows about this meeting. Has it been advertised ? Invite someone
to attend with you.

Here is how you get there from Tennessee:

Drive up the Volunteer Parkway (same road ETSU at Bristol is located on) to
State Street (main street) downtown. Turn right and continue over the railroad
tracks under the big "Bristol Sign". At the next traffic light, turn right on
Pennsylvania Avenue. Go one block and turn left on McDowell Street. It is
about one block up McDowell Street on the left.

Here is how you get there from Virginia:

Drive down Commonwealth Avenue from either I-381 or elsewhere to State Street
(main street) downtown. Turn left and continue over the railroad tracks under
the big "Bristol Sign". At the next traffic light, turn right on Pennsylvania
Avenue. Go one block and turn left on McDowell Street. It is about one block
up McDowell Street on the left.

This is evidently a special meeting for the purpose of this discussion. It is
not a city council meeting and the council will not be attending as far as I
know.

Come in the front door of the Slater Center which is the Department of Leisure
Services offices and senior center. The meeting should be easy enough to find.

We'll be looking for you.
