[Bristol-Birds] a beautiful Great White Heron standing on the rocks

Wallace,

Not a slip up. Much to our surprise there was a beautiful Great White Heron
standing on the rocks in the river providing excellent close looks. Don got
some pictures. Funny a bird like that has to take second billing to the grebes.
Pretty cool day for such a hot day.

The Pied-billed Grebe breeding record is the first for Northeast Tennessee
in more than half a century -- dating back 68 years to at least 1950.
That is a neat find !!

  Let's go birding......

P.S. Is the "Great White Heron" a name slip up ? No spring or summer
records in region -- only four for Aug. and one for Oct.

On Saturday, 6/7/08, during the Elizabethton Summer Bird Count, Don Holt,
Diane Draper and I found a Pied-billed Grebe with two young on the Watauga
River just upstream from Sycamore Shoals near the dog pound. We saw a juvenal
Red-shouldered Hawk flying overhead off of Watauga Road. At the TWRA access
area on the Watauga River, a little downstream from Elizabethton, we found a
Great White Heron.
