For most of the summer I have been visited on and off by a few of the
Yellow-crowned Night-Herons from the nesting colony down the road on
Tranbarger Drive in Kingsport. They have been foraging in our backyard where
there is a small stream. What has been interesting to me is that they very
rarely forage in the stream, but wander around the lawn like robins. They
only show up very early in the morning and are usually gone by 9:00 am.
I've speculated all summer that the birds were looking for the large night
crawlers that sometimes are still evident on the driveway and in the lawn
early mornings (especially is it is wet like today, July 5). I spent a few
minutes following a couple of adults this morning and sure enough that's
what they were finding and eating. Interesting group of birds on the lawn
this morning...neighbors chickens, robins, and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons
all eating worms.
