Gil Derouen and I saw 7 Yellow-crowned Night Herons and a Red-tailed Hawk along
the Greenway in Kingsport this morning (Tuesday, June 17).

Other species, seen along Fordtown Rd., Jackson Rd., and Harmony Rd. in the
Fall Branch area included:

Orchard Oriole
Grasshopper Sparrow
Yellow-breasted Chat

To get to the Greenway, we took American Way, just west of the E. Stone Drive
and John B. Dennis Hwy intersection, south to the parking lot at the end of the
road. Walking left (upstream), we found the hawk and one Yellow-crowned Night
Heron, which was fishing in the creek just upstream from the bridge. We found
a nest of herons at the .75 marker, which was to the right and just downstream
a short way from where we had parked. The nest is in a Sycamore tree. We saw
both parents and four young herons. The young were sitting on the edge of the
nest and on limbs just outside the nest.
