[Bristol-Birds] Washington Co., TN Merlin

Wed. 03 NOV 2004
Keebler Rd., Washington Co., TN

Watching a flock of American Pipits on the ground at the intersection of
Keebler Rd. and Smith Bridge Rd.this morning around 9 am, I looked up and saw
an
adult male Merlin hunting and scattering flocks of small birds in the recently
cultivated fields. Before, the area had seemed fairly empty, but soon nearly
a thousand small birds filled the air around the Merlin. Appearing at first
to be following the Merlin was a Northern Harrier, floating above and behind,
but it was soon outpaced by the falcon. Species seen in the vicinity included:
Northern Harrier
Merlin
Kildeer
Wilson's Snipe
Mourning Dove
Horned Lark
Eastern Bluebird
Northern Mockingbird
American Pipit
European Starling
Palm Warbler
Savannah Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Eastern Meadowlark
House Finch
