[Bristol-Birds] WHAM! Birdstrike!

A few minutes ago, my wife and I were in the kitchen and a loud bang startled us. I looked out the window and saw a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker recover and fly toward the trunk of a maple tree, followed by another sapsucker. The second somehow managed to maneuver the first to the ground at the base of the tree. I am not sure what was going on, but after a minute, one (probably the one that hit the window) escaped and flew off. The other flew up to the trunk of the tree and stayed there for 3 or 4 minutes, preening. It looked as though when it flew up, that it had a piece of feather in its beak. Seems early for territory disputes or mating activity doesn't it?
