"There will be three or four of us from Rogersville attending this meeting......
Give me directions to the Greek Restaurant, ok? Thanks..."
Those lines from today's
birder emails well express
the anticipation as regional
birders plan a long drive to
be present for the rollout of
Rick Knight's book by
Bristol Bird Club members.
The printing plant was a buzz
today as the BBC Publishing
Team gathered to watch the first elements of The Birds of Northeast Tennessee,
Second Edition, go to press.
Mike Poe, our very knowledgeable photo editor, book
designer and layout person (left) watched the resolution
and color as the inside front cover was brought online.
Mike consults with our invited artist about the exact
color desired and how well details are being reproduced.
As we moved to other parts of the cover, a spine design
had to have a remake and the presses shutdown so
the adjustment could be made, printing plates reburned
and the press again plated. When it was all rolling,
it was on the money and good eyes by our
team had detected the sort of issues we were there
to watch over.
By 3 p.m. the cover was almost completed. One by one team members left while
others
worked on this aspect and that. It was a great day.
The supervising pressman (left) talks about the press flow
as we watched the front cover roll on and on. Large
stack of finished covers were placed about the plant.
It was exciting to see the most minute adjustments made on the various units of
the four
color press as everything was being monitored and adjusted at a keyboard to
manage
the printing by computer.
As another long day came to a close, the team had
their copies of the first uncut covers from the press.
Michele Sparks was teaching in her classroom
throughout the day but arrived home to find her copies
waiting in her mailbox. She was delighted.
Tonight Rick is working on the index. Mike will have
those to the printer by start time on Monday.
The presses are quite. All is dark there. They have gone home for the weekend.
Next week will be busy as the press and production team at the print plant
burns more than
90 printing plates and continue days and days of printing. It moves to
collation and then
to binding a week from Monday.
We have two long weekend waits in this job. Mike worked throughout the night
two nights
ago, finally giving up at 5 a.m. The detail has been more than you would think.
Your Second Edition of The Birds of Northeast Tennessee is coming soon to your
birding library.
