Due to the continuous flow of room reservations for the TOS / VSO Joint Spring Meeting at Johnson City, TN, May 18-19-20, the Holiday Inn and Convention Center has re-blocked our room holdings. Our original block of rooms for the meeting was 82 and that has now been re-blocked to 95. The management staff will re-block for us as long as practical. Blocking means to hold available at the special TOS / VSO meeting rate for those of you staying at the hotel and to hold the rooms for guests attending the event. Reservations will be honored at the special rate until three weeks before the meeting (April 27). The meeting is about eight weeks away. Those who reserve rooms after the room blocks have expired must pay the full room rate as long as the hotel has vacancies. We have no reliable information on the number of birders and meeting participants who are staying at nearby hotels or with local family and friends or camping. We have had request for camping information. Also of interest, are birders coming earlier than the meeting dates and staying longer. In order to assist those who are seeking extended stays, the management is now providing the special group rate to those who register for dates from May 15 to May 23. It is evident that some birders have extended their stay in order to bird as much of the high country as they can, extending to elevations in the Southern Blue Ridge that can reach near 6,286 feet of elevation. Also popular are the all day Friday field trips. Some birders are making room reservations for Thursday, May 17, in order to arrive the night before those trips begin at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 18.
