John,
Two things you might find relevant to the siskin situation. One is
that they are sometimes easy to hand tame. In 1985 I had siskins that
would land on my feeder while I was refilling it, so I stood still with
seed in hand, and before long I had many birds landing on my head and
shoulders and taking turns feeding from my hand. This is a delight I
hope to experience again sometime. The other thing, unfortunately is
that some of them may die of diseases while here, something I observed
back in 1985. Someone told me they often catch salmonella from the
local dove population which is itself resistant. I do not know if that
is accurate. Nonetheless, the few siskins I saw in 1985 that were sick
would fluff up, close their eyes, pant, and be nonresponsive. I hope
this is not common this year. Anyway....Life is short. Enjoy the
birds.

John,
Based on previous occurrences in this region, siskins will depart
sometime in Jan., or Feb., or Mar., or Apr., or possibly even in May.
In other words, the usual "rules" don't apply to siskins and some
others.
Enjoy them while you've got them, as it may be several years before they
invade in these numbers again.

Thanks to all that responded to my request for less expensive bird
seed. I have been able to save some money on seed.
I have two very large flocks of Pine Siskins that are monopolizing my
feeders and are driving my normal birds away from my feeders. Does
anyone know when the Siskins will head north?
Thanks,
John Mellon
