Thursday, March 25th, Margareta Soderqvist Lindblad and I birded the
following locations mostly around South Holston Lake in Sullivan Co., TN
Weir Dam/Osceola Island/South Holston tailwaters:
Wood Duck (1 pr. @wetlands across from parking lot), Green-winged Teal,
Buffleheads, Mallards, Ring-necked Duck (3), Turkey Vultures, Belted
Kingfisher (2), Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe,
Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Blue Jay, American Crow, Carolina Chickadee,
Carolina Wren, Winter Wren, European Starling, Northern Cardinal
South Holston Dam:
Pied-billed Grebe, Eastern Towhee (heard in brush west of water treatment
plant)

South Holston Lake (Musick's Campground):
Common Loon (3), Pied-billed Grebe (1), Red-necked Grebe (3), Double-crested
Cormorant (2), Canada Goose (1), Red-breasted Merganser (25), Ring-billed
Gulls (~100), Tree Swallow (~8), American Crow, Eastern Bluebird (2),
Northern Mockingbird (~5), Song Sparrow (2), Common Grackle (~20)

Kingsport/Greenbelt near American Way:
Wood Duck (1pr), Mallards, Red-shouldered Hawk (2 on nest), Red-bellied
Woodpecker (2-1 excavating nest hole in tree near Red-shouldered Hawk's
nest), White-breasted Nuthatch

Patrick Henry Dam tailwaters:
Great Blue Heron (2 at dam and 10 on nests in rookery), Black-crowned Night
Heron, Mallards, Black Vulture, Mourning Doves

There are down feathers on the Red-shouldered Hawk's nest. Is that from the
parent to line nest or evidence of young in the nest? What a beautiful day
tobe out birding!
