A stop by RRL this afternoon produced some pleasant shorebirding with the
following species: western sandpiper (3), pectoral sandpiper (1), solitary
sandpiper (2), lesser yellowlegs (1), a dowitcher, and many killdeer.
I believe that the dowticher was a long-billed, but I am by no means a
dowitcher expert. This was an adult dowitcher in worn breeding plumage. I
made the id based on the amout of rufous coloring on the breast and belly, the
lack of spotting on the breast, the lack of primary projection, the rounded
back profile, and the very limited white on the lower belly. I have attached a
picture and would appreciate comments from those of you who study dowitchers.
I have other pictures.
