[Bristol-Birds] Sandhill Crane near Glade Spring in Washington Co. VA

A Sandhill Crane was seen this morning at the roadside farm pond
located on state route 91 in the community of Lodi in Washington Co.,
VA.

It was observed by Dennis Sanders of the Virginia Department of
Transportation (VDOT) Bristol district office.

The pond is a long-time favorite birding site located just under the
route 91 right-of-way and is a good area for waterfowl, shorebirds
and waterfowl. It is located about 5 miles south of Glade Spring,
8 miles east of Abingdon and 6 miles north of Damascus. It is in
the Glade Spring Christmas Bird Count area.

The crane sighting is about 16 miles NE of the Musick's Campground
on South Holston Lake where three Sandhill Cranes have been wintering
in 2008-09 in both the Virginia and Tennessee portions of the impoundment.

Sanders VDOT job works with determining the impact of road construction
on threatened and endangered species. This crane discovery was
passed along to me by Betty Edmondson with the environmental
services of VDOT's Bristol district.

Let's go birding . . .
