We enjoyed birding the Salt Ponds at Saltville, VA today. Highlights included Mallards, Widgeons, Coots, Great Blue Herons, Canada Geese and Killdeer. The Red-winged Blackbirds and Song Sparrows were singing as well as the spring peepers and other frogs. The Tree Sparrows are building nests in the nest boxes. We also spotted a Red-tailed Hawk, several Turkey Vultures, and a Phoebe ? along with the usual species. We drove out to the GB Heron nest on the North Fork of the Holston and spotted three Herons ? couldn?t tell if the nest contained any eggs or not. After that we headed up to Hidden Valley Lake in Washington Co., VA. The wind was ripping across the mountaintop and making for tough birding. We did spot one small group of birds that contained two Ring-necked Ducks and four Lesser Scaup. On Friday evening we spotted three Great Blue Herons in a 500 yard stretch of river here on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River ? Buchanan County. I suspect a nest or nests somewhere close but as yet we have not found one. We will keep looking.
