[Bristol-Birds] SAT 15 NOV 08

A belated report - last Saturday Dianne Draper, Michelle Draper-Rambo, and I saw a pair of Common Ravens near Rocky Mount on Hwy 11E (Washington Co., TN), and another pair near Whitetop Park on Hwy 394 (Sullivan Co., TN) as we drove to the area around South Holston Lake.

At Musick's Campground we saw a Pied-billed Grebe take off like the proverbial bat, just as a Common Loon surfaced where the grebe had been. It reminded me of video I've seen of Killer Whales snatching seals off of a beach, the way the loon burst suddenly out of the depths. I can't help but wonder if a Common Loon could eat a Pied-billed Grebe. We also saw a Brown Creeper near the sign-in kiosk.

At Middlebrook Lake we only saw 4 Hooded Mergansers (males), but we also had 2 Green-winged Teal, 2 Gadwall, and 170 Ring-necked Ducks. I thought other area birders would post something about the Ring-necked Ducks, but I guess the flock didn't stay long. We saw them around 3:30 pm Saturday.
