On March 25, the Russell County Bird Club held it's monthly meeting at Elk Garden. The agenda was looking for early spring migrants. Attendng were Dave Worley, Diane Worley, Fred Martin, Janice Martin, Peggy Herbert, Jerry Thornhill, Laverne Hunter and Tom Hunter. Birds seen during the meeting included: Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe, Wood Duck, Canada Goose, Mallard, Great Blue Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, Loggerhead Shrike, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Pheobe, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird(male and female}, Brown-headed Cowbird, Common Grackle, European Starling, Eastern Meadowlark, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Northern Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Common Raven, American Crow, American Robin, White-crowned Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Blue Jay, Mourning Dove, Belted Kingfisher. After the meeting was adjourned, Laverne and I drove on to Forty Foot Bridge to turn. While scanning the wetland I saw a shorebird. It was a Solitary Sandpiper. Actually, the initial call was blown. After instant replay and review, the call in the field was reversed. Dave and Diane Worley had stopped to see the Solitary when Laverne hopped out of the truck and said "Did you hear the Screch Owl". After listening for a while we finally heard an Eastern Screech Owl calling softly close to the road. Soon, another started calling from the opposite side of the road. A very nice ending to the meeting. Tom & Laverne Hunter ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing.
