A brief stop by Rural Retreat Lake yesterday turned up several shorebirds and herons. Back in the marsh were least sandpiper (5), spotted sandpiper (1), and solitary sandpiper (1). Also present there were green heron (1), great egret (1), and great blue heron (1). The large Canada goose flock is still present with almost all wearing new bands that we (DGIF) put on them at the end of June. Out the Scowanda Springs road I found an adult grasshopper sparrow singing and feeding a fledgling. Allen Boynton Troutdale, VA
