March 12, 2011 Greene County: Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC), Joachim Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area (JBR), etc. Recent rains brought some excellent birding opportunities to the county, which I was unable to pursue until this morning. Brief stops at WMDC, JBR, Bridge Burners Boulevard, Murray Bridge Road, and miscellaneous other sites, including many flooded areas, produced the following: Tundra Swan (still present at WMDC; first observed on January 1) Gadwall (22) American Wigeon (8, mostly on Murray Bridge Rd.) American Black Duck (5, Bridge Burners Blvd.) American Black Duck / Mallard hybrid (Bridge Burners Blvd.) Blue-winged Teal (2, Bridge Burners Blvd.) Northern Shoveler (43, at several sites) Redhead (4, Bridge Burners Blvd.) Ring-necked Duck (13) Bufflehead (JBR) Ruddy Duck (2, WMDC) Northern Harrier (4) Rough-legged Hawk (light-morph, JBR; probably the bird seen there by Ben Britton on February 16) American Coot (16) Lesser Yellowlegs (6, Murray Bridge Rd.) Wilson's Snipe (WMDC) Eurasian Collared-Dove (Mosheim) Barn Owl (JBR) Loggerhead Shrike (WMDC) Horned Lark (2, Baughard Hill Rd., Jim Kirk Rd.) Tree Swallow (7) Marsh Wren (WMDC) Brown Thrasher (2) American Pipit Common Yellowthroat (WMDC; probably the bird observed there on February 19) Savannah Sparrow (8) Swamp Sparrow (2, WMDC) White-crowned Sparrow (4) Don Miller Greeneville, Greene Co., TN
