REMNANTS OF FAY AFFECT BIRDING IN AREA
.....Rainfall swirling towards area.
Moisture associated with the remnants of tropical storm Fay will continue to
move
into our area today and tonight, bringing possibility of storm-related birds
and downing
migrants at Musick's Campground.
A 100% chance of rainfall tonight may produce more good birds by daybreak.
Rain was still falling in the Musick's Campground area in the last 30 minutes
before
noon and Roy Knispel reported by phone that the rain was making birding a little
difficult.
Through 1 PM EDT...a large area of rain with embedded showers... will continue
to move north around 25 mph across Northeast Tennessee and extreme Southwest
Virginia. Rainfall rates will generally be around a tenth of an inch or less
per hour.
However...hourly rainfall rates of one quarter inch or more will be possible
with a
heavy shower.
Roy said the Avocets were not visible from the parking area proper at Musick's.
They parked in the usual gravel area and walked down the hill and back up on
what birders call "Egret Island." This is a hilltop with some weedy and brushy
growth which is between Musick's Campground and the new mansion being built
northeast of the campground.
So the 10 Avocets they found there today were not where you could park at
Musick's and just see them while standing near your vehicle. They also reported
seeing Caspian Tern.
You may want to check the map mounted under the lid of the sign in station at
the campground to get your orientation on the location of the Stateline.
Check your weather report and be mindful of dangerous weather conditions. We
are approaching conditions that might spawn tornado activity so don't be caught
off
guard.
Conditions for birding may continue to be good at Musick's Campground right on
up
to dark tonight. Sunset is at 8:05 p.m. and official dark about 8:30 p.m.
Good birds
come to roost in the Spring Creek Embayment just northeast of Musick's
Campground
just after sunset.
This Afternoon: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 75. East wind
between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is
100%.
Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 66. East wind between
5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Wednesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near
78. South wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of
precipitation is 70%.
Wednesday Night: Showers likely, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low
around 65. South wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with
a high near 83. South wind between 5 and 10 mph.
This is the kind of weather conditions we want this time of year. Rick Knight
had
good birds Monday and as did others.
Let's go birding....

Roy and Gil report ten Am. avocets at Musick's Campground at 10:00 this
morning. They were on the bay to the left of the main body of water, across
from the big houses with the red roofs. They were viewed from the top of the
rise, off to the east of the gravelled parking area. Roy's cell number us
1-920-203-0332.
