Cocke County: Rankin Bottoms (RB), Dutch Bottoms, and nearby areas
The Reddish Egret that Leslie Gibbens and Michael Sledjeski found yesterday at
Rankin Bottoms was still present today. I found the bird feeding actively at
3:08 p.m. on the shore opposite (i.e., to the east of) the entrance road near
the tipple. I stayed about an hour, then returned later for about thirty
minutes. Rick Knight arrived at about 5:00, and we birded together for about
twenty minutes. He was still there when I left to return to Greeneville, and
he may have additional birds to post that I did not see.
Here's an abbreviated list of species found in addition to the Reddish Egret
(including birds found at spots other than Rankin):
Double-crested Cormorant (12)
Great Egret (34)
Black-crowned Night-Heron (RB)
Osprey (2, RB)
Lesser Yellowlegs (at least 8, RB)
Spotted Sandpiper (RB, first found by Rick)
Least Sandpiper (9, RB, viewed by both of us)
Short-billed Dowitcher (at least 5, RB)
Ring-billed Gull (9, RB)
Caspian Tern (2, RB)
Yellw-billed Cuckoo (RB)
