Glen Eller and I arrived at Rankin Bottoms (Cocke County) about 9 a.m this
morning (Tuesday, July 8) and were able to observe the REDDISH EGRET among many
Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons. Since we were looking basically east from
the gravel road, the lighting was not the best, especially at first, but we had
good looks and had plenty of opportunities to watch the Egret's feeding antics.
If you go later in the day, when the sun is behind you, the viewing should be
better, but the temperature will probably be higher.
Other birds included
Wood Ducks
Turkey Vultures
Black Vultures (many)
Osprey (2)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (in the trees along the gravel road before we stopped to
view the Egret)
Kingfisher
Indigo Bunting
Field Sparrow
Thanks to Rick Knight and Don Miller for travel instructions.
