Jan. 28, 2009: Surprising afternoon at the feeders. High counts of 39 snow
buntings, 21 horned larks, and 1 lapland longspur graced the ground under the
feeders. They stayed until almost 6:00 pm. I spread mixed seed and black oil
sunflower on top of the snow for them. The longspur was my first. Other
surprises included one female purple finch and about 9 tree sparrows. Between
feedings, the buntings perched in various places around the yard. The roof of
the garage was one spot along with the 6-foot tall wooden fence, the
crape-myrtle bush and the maple tree.
