[Bristol-Birds] Pintails & Great Blue Herons

Roger Mayhorn, Ed Talbott and Wallace Coffey birded a full day Tuesday to
check out waterfowl areas in Sullivan Co. and Carter Co., TN.

Crumley's Pond off Paddle Creek Rd in Sullivan Co. had 4 male Pintails and 2
females.

The Great Blue Heron nesting colony on Pemberton Road, just off U.S. 421 in
Holston Valley, had at least two active nests. One had two adults standing
atop the nest and another had one bird beside the nest and a fourth bird
nearby. There were probably other active nests but we didn't give the site
a real close inspection. I think I could see two new nest which haven't
been there in recent weeks.

A Tree Swallow flew past at Musick's Campground on South Holston Lake. We
also had two Bonaparte's Gulls but waterfowl were scarce.

Also at Crumley's Pond were American Wigeon 21, Green-winged Teal 2, Wood
Duck 2, Gadwall 4 and Canada Goose 10.

A Mallard and an American Wigeon were seen at the Weir Dam below South
Holston Dam. TVA was generating and virtually no other birds of interest
were found.

At Wilbur Lake in Carter Co., just below Watauga Lake, we had an estimated
100 Bufflehead. About a dozen Ring-necked Ducks were on Watauga Lake.

I checked several waterfowl areas today (Wednesday) and little was found.
Six Hooded Mergansers at Middlebrook Lake, in Bristol, TN seems to be the
remanent of the wintering population. Most have migrated north for the
breeding season. We will have a couple of birds here and there for a few weeks.

Let's go birding.....
