Area Birders,
On my way to Haysi this morning I stopped at the Breaks for a few minutes to
see if any migrants had shown up. At the Clinchfield Overlook I heard a
strange call and then located a Peregrine Falcon sitting in a dead snag below
the overlook. The bird flew toward Pinnacle Rock and so I drove over there.
There it was sitting on another dead snag and was calling. This was an adult
bird and I did not get a chance to look for a leg band as it flew out over the
gorge toward Stateline Overlook. Hopefully it is one of the birds that were
hacked here at the park last year and will make it's home here. I think I
remember something about the Breaks being the last pre-DDT nesting site in
Virginia of the Peregrine Falcon (sometime in the early 1960's).
Sadly I had to be at the Haysi Clinic by 9:00 a.m. so I did not get to look for
the bird at Stateline Overlook.
